It's almost time to relax from schoolwork and enjoy the Christmas holidays. I hope it will be well-deserved!
Our Comenius project will continue in January. We will read and study the Icelandic saga called Laeksdelasaga. It is all about the beginning of the Icelandic nation, Vikings and their culture.
The Comenius team will start planning a new theme week at our school, or maybe just a few days this time. This will happen right before or after (or maybe both) our second Comenius meeting in Iceland on March 23-29th. Four 9th-grade students - Ria, Ilona, Piia and Laura - will attend the meeting together with Hanna and Marja.
We will also start planning the third Comenius meeting, which will take place here in Iittala at the beginning of October next year. The theme will be Aleksis Kivi and his novel Seven Brothers. We will have to find a family for about 20 students from the other Comenius countries.
A Comenius Club will also start. The idea is to make a musical (Aleksis Rock musical) to be performed for the whole school, parents and for the other Comenius teams during the meeting in Iittala.
A Merry Christmas and A Happy, Successful New Year for everyone!

Greetings from lovely Bath! Our team Finland had a great time with other comenius students from Bath, Iceland, Norway and Germany. The week was filled with programme from morning to evening! We saw the sights of the city and neighbouring cities of Wells and Britol, and visited many interesting places where we filmed the story of king Arthur and his knights! The students stayed with local families and got to know a bit of the British way of life. We also went bowling together, sat by a bonfire, made some traditional food and had a nice warm farewell party at the school.
We will tell you more about our exciting week later, and you will see lots of pictures, too!

Hi there,
Today was a medieval day at our school! I saw knights, kings, queens, maidens, witches, wizards, beggars, dragons, all kinds of folks!
The legend of King Arthur has continued all week. On Monday we saw a film, on Tuesday and today we heard the story on the radio. The members of our Comenius group also went to read stories to the 1. and 2. grade pupils in their classrooms.
Great work, I say!
Yours truly,
Finn

Hi folks,
The students had a video meeting with the school in Bath today. I heard them giggling and laughing and shouting. It sounded like they had a lot of fun!
It's always very exciting to meet new people, even if they speak the same language. And all the more exciting, even unnerving, if you have to use a foreign language. But believe me, what counts is your attitude, the smiles, the laughter! If you hang along and show interest, people will be interested in getting to know you. Language can be a problem, but it shouldn't be a barrier. Always try to see the PERSON. What does it matter if your English isn't perfect - you are still perfect. The one and only you!

There was a brilliant short film about King Arthur in our school gym today. The whole school was watching - and I believe they liked what they saw! There was so much joy and enthusiasm in the whole thing! I think the 9th-graders did a good job in presenting the project for everyone. The younger pupils admire the older students and want to be like them one day! We should always keep that in mind - the power of example! Learning can be a lot of fun!

Hello folks,
My name is Finn and I'm the cute mascot of the school's Comenius club! Welcome to read about my adventures in Finland, England, Iceland, Norway and Germany. I love traveling!
So, I'm really looking forward to my first trip abroad! I'm going to fly to England soon! Only... NINE days to go! I have my suitcase ready but I haven't packed it yet. What should I take with me? Suggestions?
Next week will be exciting! COMENIUS-week at our school! I heard there will be stories, films, games, dance and... See you there! And see you HERE - I'm going to write about the week here! And add some photos.
Have a great Comenius-week!

Tässä Comenius-projektimme taustaa:
Hanke polkaistiin liikkeelle valmistelevalla vierailulla Saksan Hannoverissa viime vuoden joulukuussa. Saksalaisen Ludwig-Windthorst Schulen englanninopettaja Anne Lampe ja hänen kollegansa Sonja Whipperman isännöivät perisaksalaisella tehokkuudella kolmen päivän visiittiä. Mukana myös Hrönn Arnarsdottir Islannista ja minä Iittalasta. Päivät täyttyivät projektin suunnittelusta ja virallisen hakemuspaperin (josta sukeutui 47-sivuinen paketti...) laatimisesta. Illalla ehdimme piipahtaa saksalaisilla joulumarkkinoilla.
Projektin nimi on Northern European Stories Retold.
Projektilla on monia tavoitteita. Comenius on osa EU:n Elinikäisen oppimisen ohjelmaa. Yhteistyön avulla nuoret tutustuvat toistensa elämään, ymmärtävät samankaltaisen eurooppalaisen taustamme, oppivat komminukoimaan vieraalla kielellä, tutustuvat sekä omaansa että muiden maiden kirjalliseen perintöön, ottavat vastuuta, oppivat oma-aloitteisuutta ja projektimaista työskentelyä, jossa aikatauluista on pidettävä kiinni, käyttävät monipuolisesti tietoteknisiä apuvälineitä jne.
Tänne Suomeen Comenius-koulujen edustajat kokoontuvat ensi vuoden syys-lokakuussa. Silloin meillä on edessämme suuri haaste, jota varten työ alkaa jo ensi keväänä. Seitsemän veljeksen teemalla voimme tarjota vieraillemme ikimuistoisen Suomi-kokemuksen, jonka teemoina voimme nostaa esiin oman kielemme, kansamme luonteen, luonnon, varsinkin metsäluonnon, ja suomalaisen sisukkuuden sekä yhteisöllisyyden - veljeyden!
Yhteistyö, yhdessä tekeminen on kaiken edellytys. Kiitos jo nyt mukaan lähteneille. Toivotaan onnea ja menestystä projektillemme!
